Torsion
Wave
21" x 19" x 6" - 2001
Colorado Yule Marble, Aluminum Base
In the collection of Leslie and Jim Mooney, Eugene, OR
Torsion Wave arose from the image of a square slab subjected
to a torsion force, a twist of opposite edges in opposite directions.
The resulting shape has a pair of opposite faces that acquire
saddle shapes. The two views, at left, present the saddle sides
straight-on and on-edge, respectively. This marble comes from
the Yule Creek quarry near Marble, Colorado. Early in the twentieth
century, this quarry produced the marble for hundreds of public
buildings, including the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington
Monument in Washington, D.C..
