A Martian Moonrise
12" x 22" x 8" - 2002
California Red & Black Mohave Marble
$1600

The spherical depression I carved in this billion-year-old stone reveals a spherical moon hovering over a red planet whose horizon is defined by a white vein in the marble. The moon could be either Phobos or Deimos, the first two observed moons of Mars, which were named for the horses pulling the chariot of Mars, the Roman god of war.
