The images at left show the process of carving one of my more recent sculpture, Solar Eclipse.
In this first stage, a pattern of tangent circles of ten and eighteen inch diameter is skeched on the stone. Then the inner circle is used to guide the core drilling of a ten inch diameter plug of unwanted material.
